Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
