Powerful Gales Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to remain inside as severe gales strike the nation.

Powerful gales reaching speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 homes without power and compelled officials to cancel in excess of 100 air travel services, according to regional news sources.

These gusts are impacting the complete southern region and southern sections of the northern region, according to the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have issued uncommon red wind warnings - the top caution category - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and get ready for further power and communication outages.

Broad Destruction and Crisis Measures

This outage seems to be impacting homes mostly in the South Island, although officials say that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gales.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was blown onto approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel to and from the city have been cancelled because of the winds, and certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have announced a state of emergency, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Conditions

The powerful gales on Thursday coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been called a "mega strike", requesting better pay and working conditions.

However the intense climate has compelled them to modify various scheduled activities, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or called off.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, ushering in a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have announced fire bans for concern about wildfires.
