Numerous People Missing After Vessel Transporting 200 Migrants Goes Down off the Gambian coast.

The shipwrecked vessel was found stranded on a shoal, authorities say.

At least seven souls lost their lives and numerous others are missing in the wake of a boat transporting approximately 200 migrants attempting to reach the European continent sank near the shoreline of The Gambia, officials state.

The vessel capsized in the early hours of Thursday near the village of Jinack in the northern bank region and it was afterwards located "stranded on a sandbar", the country's defence ministry announced officially.

96 individuals were pulled to safety and a search is continuing for other passengers who were on board the shipwrecked vessel that was en route to the Spanish Canary Islands.

The hazardous trip over the Atlantic Ocean has become an increasingly common route for African asylum seekers trying to reach Europe.

Close to forty-seven thousand migrants reached the Canary Islands in 2024 and estimates in excess of 9,000 people have lost their lives trying.

Rescue Operation

After Wednesday's accident, Gambia's naval forces began a rescue mission, involving multiple navy ships and a fishing vessel that offered help, the defense officials reported.

Authorities say some of the deceased are not Gambian nationals and that their identities are still being verified.

The deceased of the seven people who died have been retrieved, and ten of the survivors are described as being in grave health and undergoing emergency treatment.

A Frequent Pathway

In recent years, the European Union has forged deals with multiple North African nations aimed at reducing illegal migration.
