Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
