An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
